We were still vacationing in Missouri after my cousin's wedding when the New Year came upon us. Since all of the Walquist side of the family was still together, we decided to celebrate with a little New Year's Eve party in the hotel. The room was a bit tight for our activities, and it wasn't easy keeping the kids' excited voices from getting too loud, but it seemed like the kids still had a great time!
One of the activities we did was to have a "spotlight" dance party. We started by saying someone's name after the word "spotlight," and that person had to show us his best dance moves. Then, everyone else in the room had to copy that person's moves. This game brought out some pretty silly dances and lots of giggles!
Eventually, someone had had the idea to pull out this lamp to use as an actual spotlight to shine on the kids. They thought it was great!
After our crazy dancing, we played a quieter game of the classic Heads-up 7-up. This game was new to most of the kids. They caught on fairly quickly.
Our other (not pictured) activities were playing The Game of Things where every kid was partnered with an adult. This was hilarious! We also went around the room and had each family share their favorite memory from 2018.
Finally, it was time for the ball drop... or at least our own earlier-hour modified ball drop. We found a youtube video to watch that counted down the last minute until the new year.
At the stroke of "midnight" (or probably more likely sometime around 8pm), chaos erupted in our room! We shouted out "Happy New Year!," pulled down the zip cord for the balloon drop, and made some noise with our noisemakers.
What a fun way to celebrate, even away from home!
