For several years, we've seen pictures on Matt and Kim's blog of their family going blueberry picking. This summer we were excited that we could join them on this adventure! Our picking-day was on a weekend that Jason was out of town, so although we were sad that Jason missed the event, the boys and I were happy to have an outing that day to keep us busy.
Kim and Matt filled us in on all the blueberry picking tricks-of-the-trade.
#1 Wear old clothes.
#2 Bring lots of water.
#3 Ride in a wagon or stroller.
#4 Wear a hat (Ian and Cody followed this rule for a few minutes at least...).
#5 Find a spot where the blueberries are plentiful and within reach of little arms.
#6 Everyone carries his or her own bucket.
#7 Pick only berries that are blue, no red or white berries.
#8 It's okay to snack on a few berries here and there. :)
#9 The older you are, the more blueberries you will likely get. Even after sharing a few berries with his cousins, Ian had a bucket that was nearly half-full. We were impressed with his berry-picking stamina. Cody and Jaden, on the other hand, finished the day with only a small handful of berries in their bucket (but lots in their tummies!).
#10 You are never too young to start berry-picking. :)
#11 It's important to take occasional breaks in the shade for water and, yes, a few more berries.
#12 All of your hard work feels quite rewarding in the end when you weigh and purchase your hand-picked stash of berries. Yum!
#13 Blueberry picking is always a lot more fun with family!
#14 After arriving home, playing with water is the perfect way to clean up and cool down.
Even with the hot and humid morning (still an adjustment for this MT family!), the boys and I thoroughly enjoyed our first berry-picking experience. Cody and Jaden really seemed to have fun with the process, and they stayed content out in the heat longer than I expected. Thanks again, Matt and Kim, for letting us tag along with your family on this new adventure!
I just looked back at your post since I'm doing my own blueberry picking post and couldn't remember all of the details. This is hilarious! I love how you wrote this up ... though I'm pretty sure that you figured out most of these pearls of wisdom on your own. :) Can't wait to go picking again next year!
