Pi Day

While Jason's parents were visiting in March, we decided to have a Schleicher family dinner. My sister had the idea to celebrate Pi Day since we were gathering on March 14 (3-14). She started off the evening by explaining the basic concept of pi to the kids. My sister is such a wonderful teacher! She always knows just how to use language and explanations these kids understand.

Okay, so maybe these two littles didn't fully grasp the concept, but they sure enjoyed all the activities of the evening! Adley loves any excuse to spend time with her cousin Noah. :)

After the brief teaching time, Kim had each kid pair up with an adult. The pairs measured both the circumference and the diamer of various circles with a long ribbon or string.

Then, everyone used calculators to divide their numbers and compared their answers with the whole group. The numbers weren't exactly on target, of course, but the kids definitely noticed a similar pattern with their answers. So cool!

For the next activity, Kim had drawn out the numbers 1-9 in a circle. She read the first 10 or so digits of pi and had the kids run from one number to the next. Leo and Uncle Matt helped Adley with her run!

We were all quite impressed that Ian didn't even need his mom to read off the numbers. This math whiz has a large portion of the numbers in pi memorized.

The last game was a card game where everyone worked together to try to lay down the next number in pi.

We ended the evening by eating some delicious PIE that Grandpa and Grandma had purchased for the family. Yum!! What a perfect ending to a fun event!

  1. I loved reading about this as I had not heard about all of the fun activities. What a great way to learn math!
